Beira
is now becoming a smarter place, so we are also trying to help them
consider what changes we will need to make in the house in order
to provide what the guests are now expecting. There are also many
more places to stay in the city, so people can now choose what sort
of accommodation they want, and the fact that by staying with us
they help to finance the other things that we run from the house,
such as teaching/training Pastors and Church Workers or providing
Literature etc, are not a consideration when it come to their comfort.
The
1st of June 2007 was Children's day here, so this year all the teachers
at the school had to come in fancy dress, so I borrowed Jeff's chef's
whites and apron etc, then made an oversized chef's hat to go with
it. Jeff baked me a tray of miniature sweet rolls, and I let the
children ice them different in vivid coloured icing etc. We had bright
pink, royal blue and a rather lurid green, but it didn't stop anyone
eating them at break time. With the sale of these and other cakes,
the school raised over 4,000 Meticais for a local orphanage.
It was
also decided that the last day of term would be a Non-uniform Day,
and everybody would try and wear something yellow. Typically, that
was the only colour I didn't have in my wardrobe, so I had to make
something quick. Yellow doesn't really suit me, so I wasn't quite
sure about what I was going to do until we found some tiger skin
print in bands of white and yellowy orange. It was just far enough
off a true yellow for me to feel comfortable in it, yet yellow enough
to fit in with the requirements of the day. With Jeff's help I designed
and made a traditional style dress and trouser suit in a mixture
of tiger print and plain matching cotton fabric that I feel I can
wear for other things.
